Rain Pounds N Karnataka Districts, 5 Die in Gulbarga

GULBARGA : Torrential rain in the district damaged 861 houses on Sunday, according to Additional Deputy Commissioner Govind Reddy. Five people and 24 livestock died.

One person died in Kotanahipparaga village of Aland taluk on Saturday. Prashant Biswas (25), son of Sushant Biswas, was washed away by a river when he was crossing a bridge. His body was found on Sunday. Among the deceased, one person was from Gulbarga city, one from Okalli village, one from Aland and one from Chittapur.  One person is still untraced in Potangal village of Chincholi taluk. Crop loss on 14,000 hectares has been reported along river banks.

‘Damage in Raichur Pegged at Rs 61 Cr’

Raichur: Rain that has been lashing the district since August 21 have caused a loss worth `61.50 crore to public property and crops, said District Minister Dr Sharanprakash Patil here on Sunday. He was speaking to reporters after inspecting the rain-affected areas in the city.  Rain damaged 1,297 houses partially and 50 houses completely. Five huts were washed away.

He said `2 crore would soon be released to take up relief works in the district and that the district administration already has an available fund of `1.60 crore, which will be used for some relief works that have been proposed.

Seven ganji (gruel) kendras have been opened in Raichur city. The city municipality has handed over the responsibility of supplying drinking water to Karnataka Urban Water Supply Board.

Relief Works

Bidar: Deputy Commissioner P C Jaffer instructed the officials to take up relief works immediately in rain damaged areas. He was speaking at an official meeting conducted here at DC’s office on Sunday.

He instructed the officers of district level, taluk level and Gram Panchayat to stay put in their headquarters.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s instruction is to respond immediately to any damage caused by rains, he said. and other officers were present in the meeting.

Seven Houses Damaged in Hubli

Hubli: Incessant rain that has been lashing the twin cities for the past five days continued to disrupt normal life. On Sunday, seven houses collapsed in Hubli city, which include five in Amargol area and one each at Durgadbail and Sadar Sofa localities. All these houses were made of mud.  No casualties were reported.

In Belgaum 

Belgaum: Though Khanapur and Belgaum taluks  have recorded the highest rainfall in the district in the last three months, it is still below the expected average. The other taluks have received more than the expected rainfall.

In June, the district received 766 mm and the expected average was 1,267 mm.  In July, the district received 2,262.1 mm (expected 1,971 mm).
