Rare copper inscription from 17th century found in Karnataka

The inscription, having 33 lines, was issued during the period of Veerabhadra Nayaka, the grandson  of Venkatappa Nayaka and son of Bhadrappa Nayaka from Keladi dynasty.

SHIVAMOGGA: A rare copper inscription belonging to Keladi Shivappa Nayaka of the 17th century was found in Sagar taluk recently.

The inscription was collected from J S Rajashekaraiah of Uttaradi Mutt at Shantabailu in Yadehalli village near Anandapuram of Sagar taluk.

The inscription is 6.5 inch wide, 10 inch in length and 0.5 mm thick. It has 33 lines inscribed. On the front side, it has 16 lines and 17 lines on the back.

Dr Balakrishna Hegde from Kamala Nehru Women’s College in Shivamogga along with Dr S G Samak have presented a research paper on the copper inscription at the 30th annual conference of Karnataka Itihasa Academy held in Dharwad university recently.

his inscription was issued during the period of Veerabhadra Nayaka, the grandson  of Venkatappa Nayaka and son of Bhadrappa Nayaka from Keladi dynasty.
 According to the text, Veerabhadra Nayak has donated the land to Siddalinga  Devaru, a disciple of Uttaradi Devaru from Anandapuram in Haratal region on  15th day of Shravana month in the year 1632. The Keladi dynasty ruler had  published 51 edicts and this is supposed to be the  11th inscription issued by  Veerabhadra Nayak, he added.

 Noted historian Dr A K Shastry presided over the conference.
