SC and ST nursing students to get Rs 50,000 scholarship

BENGALURU: Nursing students belonging to the SC and ST communities have reason to rejoice this Ganesha Chaturthi.

The state government has announced a `50,000 annual scholarship for them.

The scheme will cover those enrolled for BSc and diploma courses in nursing in government as well as private colleges, Social Welfare Minister H Anjaneya said here on Friday.

The Siddaramaiah government has allocated `5,464 crore for the welfare of SCs and STs in the budget. Many more similar schemes are being drawn up for social and economic empowerment of SCs, STs and backward classes, Anjaneya said.

The state government is also reimbursing the fees for SC and ST engineering and medical students. Similar financial aid is also being provided to SC and ST candidates enrolling for training to become IAS, IPS officers and chartered accountants, the minister said.

New residential schools

Speedy action is being taken to open 125 Morarji Desai and Rani Chennamma residential schools in the next academic year. Anjaneya also assured that the quality of food served in Social Welfare Department hostels will be improved.
