Mangalore University Home to 77 Species of Birds

Express News Service

MANGALURU: A bird count on the campus of Mangalore University spread over 300 acres in Konaje helped students and research scholars record 77 species of birds.

The findings of Campus Bird Count, conducted as part of greater initiative called ‘Great Backyard Bird Count’ (GBBC) by eBIRD and Bird Count India (from February 12-15), was a revelation of sorts as the university ecology, located 20 km from Mangaluru, continues to protect a variety of bird life.

The previous campus bird count conducted  in 2013 had recorded about 81 species of birds in the campus.

The team of birdwatchers Radhakrishna, Akhila, Deepak, Gangadhar, Chaitanyamurthy, Krithika, Milana, Nithish, Arun, Ganesh and Gopal led by a research scholar in Department of Applied Zoology, Vineeth Kumar  believe that they were able to record less species of birds in comparison to previous bird count, due to short duration of survey.
