BENGALURU: The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday stayed the resolution passed by Karnataka Legislative Assembly convicting two journalists.
The Assembly in its recent winter session had convicted the journalists and imposed a year sentence for alleged breach of privilege due to certain articles published by the two.
On Wednesday, hearing the petition filed by the editors Ravi Belagere and Anil Raj, Justice A S Bopanna stayed the resolution of conviction until further orders.
The Government is said to have issued directions for the arrest of the journalists after the conviction was confirmed in the last session.
Earlier in June this year, the assembly had adopted the recommendations of the committee of privileges to imprison and fined the two journalists. The committee had examined the alleged defamatory articles against three legislators including K B Koliwad, B M Nagaraj (both Congress) and BJP MLA S R Vishwanath. In the last session, only three MLA's argued in favour of reconsidering the sentence while all the other legislators had supported the conviction.
