BENGALURU: With farmers’ agitation demanding remunerative price for their produce and waiver of farm loans spreading to more states, KPCC president G Parameshwara has demanded Narendra Modi government to announce a national policy on farm loan waiver.

Reiterating the Siddaramaiah government’s stand to waive farm loans obtained from co-operative banks if the Union government does the same on farm loans obtained from nationalised banks, Parameshwara said, “Waiving of loans obtained by farmers from co-operative banks without a similar gesture by the Union government for loans obtained from nationalised banks would amount to discrimination. So waiver of farm loans obtained from nationalised banks is imperative to provide succour to farming community.”

“It is an irony that the centre, which banned use of red beacons on the cars of VIPs overnight, is reluctant to come to the rescue of farmers,” he said. Replying to a question about state government’s commitment to bail out farmers reeling under the debt burden, Parameshwara assured that the state government would take affirmative action to help the farmers if the Union government conveys its inability to waive farm loans.
