BENGALURU: Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy’s daughter Sowmya Reddy is taking the plunge into electoral politics with a shot at the post of Youth Congress president of the Bengaluru unit. Former police officer B K Shivaram’s son Rakshit Shivaram too has set his eyes on the post.

With the 2018 Assembly election approaching fast, elections to the party posts in the Youth Congress is witnessing intense fight.

According to party sources, party workers in many places have complained of election malpractice to Bhupendra Singh, who is the returning officer for the elections.

There are eight contenders for the president’s post and chief among them are Basanagouda Badarli, nephew of Sindhanur MLA Hampannagouda Badarli, K N Rajendra, son of Madhugiri MLA K N Rajanna, Umesh Byre Gowda, Shivakumar, Amruthraj, K Kemparaj, Pushpa Latha and Sumaya Tabrez.

Polling is scheduled to be held from May 14 to 17 and there are around 3.62 lakh voters. Counting of votes for district committees will be held on May 18, while counting for the state president’s post is scheduled on May 19 in Bengaluru.

MLC Rizwan Arshad was the state Youth Congress president for the last two terms.
