BENGALURU: Finally, farmers have something to cheer for as the South West monsoon has reached Kerala, and is expected to hit the state by June 4. The monsoon, which is forecast to be normal this year, comes as a relief following consecutive years of drought induced by low rainfall.

Sundar M Metri, Director in-charge, Indian Meteorological Department told Express that the monsoon would reach the coast of Karnataka by June 4. It would take a few more days before the interior parts of the state can receive rainfall.

More showers

As soon as the monsoon sets of the coasts of Karnataka, indications are that another depression in the Bay of Bengal will result in heavy showers for coastal Karnataka, Malnad and South Interior Karnataka region. SSM Gavaskar, scientist, Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Cell said the depression will draw westerly winds, resulting in widespread heavy showers.

An IMD forecast says heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast for coastal and south interior Karnataka over the next few days. Coastal Karnataka is projected to get widespread showers in the next five days. More showers is forecast for North Interior Karnataka. Rainfall in South Interior Karnataka will be fairly widespread till Thursday, before the region starts receiving widespread rainfall.
