Undertrial attempts to escape by assaulting cops, detained in Mangaluru

MANGALURU: An undertrial housed in the district jail made a failed attempt to escape from police custody while he was being escorted from the district court in Kodialbail, after assaulting the police and a home guard.

The accused has been identified as Numan (25), a resident of Punjalakatte, who was jailed in a robbery case a year ago.

Police sources said that the accused Numan had a hearing at the district court on Wednesday and was being escorted by head constable Kuriakose and home guard Mohan.

After the hearing when they reached a spot near the district BJP office, on their way back to the jail, Numan attempted to escape by assaulting his accompanying guards through his handcuffs. Though shocked by the sudden attack, the guards managed to detain him with the help of locals.
