MYSURU: Very heavy rainfall recorded in parts of Mysuru district dampened the Dasara spirit in the Mysuru city on Wednesday. Four people suffered injuries in the city when the wall of a house collapsed.
In Saleem Nagar locality, houses built under the JNNURM programme developed cracks, due to which about 30 families were shifted to safer places. In JP Nagar, Kanakagiri at the foot of Chamundi Hill and in other low-lying areas, heavy showers overnight led to a similar situation. At Srirampura, people who were stuck inside their homes due to inundation were evacuated out in boats.
Mysuru city, which is decked up for the Dasara celebrations, received heavy rainfall from 6 pm affecting tourists and the public. Cultural programmes scheduled as part of Dasara celebrations were affected. A power shutdown plunged parts of central Mysuru into darkness. As a result, Dasara illumination in New Satyajit Rao Road was withdrawn by Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation.
The Tavarekere tank atop the Chamundi hill and tanks in Hootagalli have filled up, submerging vast swathes of land on the outskirts of the city. Many other tanks along the Mysuru-Nanjangud road are also overflowing.
