CHINTHAMANI : Hundreds of farmers, who came to Chinthamani APMC market to sell their crops on Saturday, all of a sudden took to the streets paralysing traffic for more than one hour, alleging that indefinite strike by lorry operators inconveniencing them.
The All India Motor Transport Congress has started an indefinite strike across the country to demand removal of toll plazas on national highways.
The farmers also demanded that the government intervene into the issue or pay compensation to them.
Raitha Sangha leader G V Raghunatha Reddy said farmers from Kolar and Chikballapur are facing huge losses due to steep fall in prices of tomatoes and mangoes.
“Due to the indefinite strike of lorry operators, crops of farmers could not be transported to other markets and neighbouring states in the past two days,” he alleged.
The government should immediately solve the issue of lorry owners or make necessary arrangements to pay compensation to farmers who are sustaining losses, he added.
Following the protest, APMC president Yeregarahalli Ravi and secretary Kiran rushed to the spot and held a meeting with Chinthamani lorry operators representative Afsar Pasha.
