BALLARI: A family of foreigners, which was on its way to Hampi, was fascinated when then saw farmers engaged in agriculture activities around the world heritage site. They soon joined the farmers and started helping them in cultivation. But, what the farmers could afford to give them back was a handful of peanuts. The term ‘paid in peanuts’ was literally true for this family of unidentified foreigners, when they were rewarded with peanuts for helping the farmers at Kyasanakere village in Kudalgi taluk on Wednesday.
The foreigners, who were a family of four with two children, according to an eyewitness, saw the farming activities and stopped their vehicle aside, and approached the farmers requesting them to allow them join them. The unidentified farmers stood as mute spectators as they could not understand what they were speaking. Sridhar Kiccha of Kudalgi, a passerby, who noticed the same acted as a translator between the two groups. The villagers were happy to allow the foreigners to till their land. They even assisted them when they started like how to make the bullock move ahead and how to balance the farm implement.
A little later when the parents of the children insisted they should move, the reluctant children returned. But the farmers stopped them and offered them a handful of peanuts and thanked them. “This is for eating,” the farmers said as they offered it. In a clipping available with the Express, the villagers were heard asking the foreigner kids “Can’t you speak Kannada? The translators, who laughed at this, said they do not belong to this country. How can you expect them to speak in Kannada?” The clipping is now going viral on social media.
