BENGALURU: Polling for biennial elections to six legislative council seats - three each from Teachers’ and Graduates constituencies - was held on Friday. The results are scheduled to be announced on June 12.
Southeast Teachers’ constituency polled the highest votes with 91.84% voter turnout while Bengaluru Graduates constituency registered the least with 64.11%. South Teachers’ constituency polled 79.91% votes while Southwest teachers’ constituency polled 80.45%. The southwest graduates’ constituency polled 70.04% votes while Northeast constituency polled 70.13% votes.
Seventy five candidates were in the fray from all six constituencies including three sitting MLCs- Ramesh Babu of JD(S) from Southeast Teachers constituency, Marithibbe Gowda of JD(S) from South Teachers constituency and Capt Ganesh Karnik of BJP from South West Teachers constituency. Friday’s elections saw 22 candidates contesting from Bengaluru Graduates Constituency.
Former Legislative council deputy chairman Maritibbegowda is seeking re-election from South Teachers constituency. Former MLA from Hebbal assembly constituency Y A Narayanaswamy contested from South-East Teachers seat while former MP from Shivamogga Ayanur Manjunath stood in South-West Graduates constituency.
Controversial Kannada activist and former MLA Vatal Nagaraj contested from North-East Graduates constituency. BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa and KPCC chief Dr G Parameshwara had spent three days campaigning for their candidates in the run-up to Friday’s elections.
