BENGALURU: The Urban Development Department on Thursday told the Karnataka High Court that it had withdrawn the controversial BBMP (pet dog licensing) Bye Laws with immediate effect.

A notification to this effect was submitted by the government before the Karnataka High Court.

Taking note of it, a division bench of Chief Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice Krishna Dixit disposed of the PIL filed by a city based teacher Indira Gopala Krishna against the bye laws that govern pet dogs in city.

She had challenged the bye laws on the ground that they were unilateral and arbitrary, as the public views had not been taken before issuing these bye laws.

The notification stated that the bye laws are withdrawn with immediate effect in view of the strong opposition by the public as well as animal lovers and organisations. The entire issue will be re-examined as it could not be implemented same as it is, the urban development department said.
