PALAKKAD: Former MLA C K Narayanankutty, 84, of Ezhakad Chengarath, died at a private hospital near here on Tuesday.

He was a member of the first assembly of United Kerala (Aikya Keralam). He is survived by wife Shanthi, children Satish Chandran and Jayasree.

Narayanankutty who graduated from the Kerala Varma College in Thrissur and took a degree in law from the Madras Law College. He had practised in the Palakkad Bar. He had been a member of the Communist party after he was active in the Students Federation of India.

C K Narayanankutty had contested from the Parli bilingual assembly of Palakkad district in 1957 and won. He defeated K Gopalakrishnan Nair of the Congress by 7,631 votes. He had worked with Communist leaders like E M S Namboodiripad, C Achutha Menon and M N Govindan Nair.

District Collector M C Mohandas placed a wreath on behalf of the State Government.

Among those who visited the residence and offered tributes included N N Krishnadas MP, MLAs M Hamza, president of the district panchayat Subaida Ishaaq, CPM district secretary P.Unni, CPI district secretary Vijayan Kunissery, and president of the district co-operative bank K V Ramakrishnan.

The body was cremated at the Ivor Madom in Thiruvilwamala.
