THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As many as 29 ABVP activists of the Mahatma Gandhi College here were arrested by the police on charges of gheraoing the college principal and causing destruction to the college property.

Classes at the college have been suspended indefinitely following the incident. The classes had been suspended for more than a month till a couple of weeks ago following violence by ABVP activists.

On Monday, the issue began with the ABVP activists insisting that a section of students, who lacked sufficient attendance, should be allowed to write the University examination.

The college authorities had barred these students from appearing for the examination citing University norms.

In protest against this, the ABVP activists gheraoed the college principal G. Madhukumar. The student activists also caused destruction to office property.
