THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Renowned Carnatic musician Parassala B.Ponnammal has been selected for this year’s Swati Sangeetha Puraskaram instituted by the State Government.

This was announced by Cultural Affairs Minister M.A.Baby at a news conference here on Monday. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, a plaque and a citation.

Baby said that Ponnammal was selected considering her overall contribution to the world of music. Ponnammal has the honour of being the first female artist to perform at the Navarathri Music Festival organised by the Travancore royal family.

She was recently awarded the Chembai Memorial Musical Award for her outstanding contribution to South Indian classical music.
