THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Poet D Vinayachandran and veteran journalist and Samakalika Malayalam Varika editor S Jayachandran Nair have been selected for the Pandalam Kerala Varma poetry and media awards.

Pandalam Kerala Varma Smaraka Samithi president K S Ravikumar and secretary P.Ravivarma told a news conference here on Saturday that Vinayachandran’s poetry collection “Soumyakashi” had been selected for the poetry award. The media award goes to Jayachandran Nair for the editorial “Venkitaraman Ramakrishnan and Rahul Gandhi” appeared in the October 14 issue of the Samakalika Malayalam Varika. The poetry award carries a cash prize of Rs 10,001, a memento and a citation. The media award carries a cash prize of Rs 5,001, a memento and a citation.

They said that a jury comprising Vishnunarayanan Namboodiri, K S Ravikuamr and P Ravivarma selected Vinayachandran for the award. Another jury comprising C.Gouridasan Nair, K.S.Ravikumar and P Ravivarma selected Jayachandran Nair for the media award.

The jury observed that the editorial appeared in the Samakalika Malayalam Varika had criticised the unjust manner in which the main stream media treated the winning of the Nobel Prize by Venkitaraman Ramakrishnan and Rahul Gandhi’s Kerala visit on the same day. The award presentation ceremony will be held at the YMCA Hall here on January 23 at 5.30 p.m.
