PALAKKAD: One more case was filed by an unwed tribal mother from Pattimalam, near Agali, Attappadi, before the special team led by Agali DySP M K Gopalakrishnan on Friday. With this the total number of cases related to unwed mothers has gone up to 21.

Meanwhile, Ramesh, 25, a bus conductor of Kottathara village near Agali, who was arrested based on a complaint by a tribal unwed mother from Pattimalam tribal hamlet, was produced before the court and remanded in custody. In the complaint the girl said that she was in love with Ramesh and when she became pregnant the lover abandoned her. Now she is the mother of a twomonthold baby. Ramesh, who had married another girl, was living in Attappadi.

It was the volunteers of Mahila Samakhya under the Ministry of Human Resources Development, who did a survey in 20 tribal hamlets of Attappadi and brought to the fore the travails of the unwed mothers in the tribal community.

The volunteers then persuaded them to file a complaint with the police.

Anti-trafficking cell nodal officer and DIG A Sreejith had conducted a sitting in Attappadi on April 23 in this regard and the police have registered cases.

Of the 21 cases, 13 are within the Agali police station limits and the remaining eight in the Sholayur police stations limits.

More arrests will be made soon, the police said.
