Blow for Niki Das as KAAPA Board rejects plea

In a major setback to DYFI and SFI, which launched protests against the Goonda Act, the Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act (KAAPA) Advisory Board has rejected the representation of Julius Niki Das, son of K K Lathika MLA and CPM leader P Mohanan, seeking cancellation of deportation slapped upon him under the Act.

The KAAPA Advisory Board, which considered the application on Thursday, approved the police action of slapping the provisions of the Goonda Act on Niki Das, a local DYFI leader. It was in last May, Jose George, IGP Kannur Range, issued deportation order against Niki Das after he was included in the Goonda list.

According to police, Niki Das is facing trial in five criminal cases charged under various sections, including rioting. The cases were registered on complaints filed by various persons and not suo motto by the police. As per the order, Niki Das could not enter the district for one year.

The Board also rejected the representation of Noushad aka Dinkan Noushad, a Muslim Youth League activist, seeking to reduce the duration of his deportation period to six months from one year.

Earlier, DYFI and SFI had commenced protests alleging that the UDF government was using the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 2007 to target youth and student activists for protesting against the government’s ‘anti-people’ policies.
