No plan for Third Front: Prakash Karat

Express News Service

CPM general secretary Prakash Karat on Thursday said that the CPM will not take any initiative to form a Third Front in the country. “The CPM is yet to discuss the issue on the formation of a Third Front. We don’t think it is an effective alternative to the Congress and the BJP in the present scenario,” he said.

He was speaking after inaugurating a national discourse on ‘Left Alternatives for Indian Economy, Political Democracy and Society’ held at the Costford Auditorium here on Thursday.

There is no relevance for a Third Front for the time being. Rather the CPM will focus on increasing its strength in Parliament, he said. “It is not a new front, but a change in policy that matters. Regional parties have their own interests but it will not serve good at the national-level, he added.

The CPM’s aim is to form a Leftist Democratic Alternative against the neo-liberal policies and anti-people policies of the ruling government. We will give stress only to a permanent alternative based on the policies of regional parties. However, the CPM will forge alliances with regional parties in various states for election purposes, he stressed.
