No let-up in rain fury

Vinod Joy

The fury of rain and flood is yet to diminish in the taluks of Changanassery and Kuttanadu. Several houses and roads are under water and the normal life has severely been affected.

Several parts of Kuttanadu taluk have been cut off from the mainstream and the traffic along the routes including the KSRTC services have come to a standstill because of the rising water level.

According to Kuttanad taluk officials, a total of 13 houses have been destroyed completely in the taluk and 125 houses were partially destroyed. Revenue authorities have calculated a total loss of Rs 30 lakhs in the taluk. The government has set apart Rs 1 crore for relief work in the affected areas. Currently, around 262 relief camps are functioning in the taluk were 1,17,000 people have been rehabilitated. There are 46 camps functioning in the Talavady village alone.  According to official data, Talavady is the village which accomodates the largest number of relief camps under the Kuttanadu taluk. A total of 42 relief camps are functioning in the Kavalam panchayat. The panchayat is almost cut off from the main land as all modes of transport including jankar services have been called off, because of the flood situation.
