MVD plans automated driver testing tracks

Byju Aryad

Owing to the phenomenal increase in motor vehicles on the roads, the Motor Vehicles Department is planning to improve the quality of driving with the introduction of Automated Driver Testing Tracks and by strict implementation of the existing rules to get driving licences.

Directions had been issued by the Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) for conducting the tests in two parts for Light Motor Vehicle (LMV), two and three wheelers. Part I will be ground test and Part II will be road test. Transport Commissioner P Vijayanand said that Automated Driver Testing Tracks was now available in Kozhikode, at Chevayur driving testing centre. As the next step it will be implemented in Kannur also. Those who apply for the licence would have to drive on special tracks and their performance will be monitored by hi-tech video based sensors which ensures transparency in providing the licence.

The video clippings would be uploaded in a computer which would analyse the skills of the driver and the software will generate a report whether the candidate has passed or failed in the test. The new directive of the MVD came into effect on May 1. The candidates should have to stop and re-start the vehicle on a steep upward incline making proper use of hand brake or throttle and the foot brake without sliding back.
