PSC to bypass new eligibility norms

N V Ravindranathan Nair

The delay in amending the special rules for implementing the revised eligibility criteria for the posts of Last grade servants (various), LD clerk (various) and Secretariat Assistants is forcing the Public Service Commission (PSC) to go by the prevailing eligibility criteria while issuing notification for recruitment to these posts.

It was on June 1, 2011, that the  General Administration Department had revised the  eligibility criteria for these posts.  Before the revision of eligibility criteria, only a pass in SSLC was required  for a candidate to apply for the LDC (Various) post.  Under the revised eligibility norms, a candidate should have passed the Plus Two course.

As per the revised eligibility norms, graduates could not apply for the Last Grade servant post. There has been widespread complaints against this stipulation as more than 20 percent of the 5.43 lakh strong State Government employees belonged to the last grade category and a majority of those applying for these posts are graduates.

For the Secretariat Assistants post, a graduation in any subject is the stipulated eligibility. However, under the revised eligibility norms, the candidates should  have at least 45 per cent marks in degree examination for Arts and Commerce subjects  and 50 per cent for Science subjects.
