Congress MP from Kollam N Peethambara Kurup was on Sunday booked under non-bailable sections for allegedly misbehaving with leading actress Shweta Menon during the President’s Boat race function here the other day.

The East Police have registered a case against the parliamentarian after Shweta’s statement was recorded following a complaint by CPM’s youth outfit DYFI.    The police have registered a case under Sections 354, 354 (A) of the IPC and Section 119 of the Police Act, which would attract five years of imprisonment for outraging the modesty of a woman. The police said Kurup’s statement will also be recorded.

A police team from Kollam, including a woman circle inspector, had recorded Shweta’s statement at her residence in Kochi on Sunday. The actor is understood to have mentioned the names of two persons, including Kurup. The police team refused to disclose the details. Now, Shweta will have to give her statement before a magistrate.

The police will also record the statements of more witnesses and the video clippings of the Friday’s event will be accepted as part of the evidence. Meanwhile, Kollam District Collector B Mohanan, against whom Shweta had alleged that he had ignored her complaint, maintained that he did not receive any complaint from her. Mohanan said he had ordered Kollam City Police Commissioner to inquire into the incident following an SMS from CPM MLA Aisha Potti.

Meanwhile, Kurup denied the allegations on the ground that he tried to protect the actress when some persons in the crowd tried to misbehave with her. Kurup also said that he had expressed his regret to the actress and her husband Sreevalsan Menon if he or any other persons had caused any difficulty to her.
