The Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation Ltd (Supplyco) accorded an unexpected ‘Vishu Kaineettam’ (gift) by keeping its Vishu-Easter outlet closed in the district on Monday, the day before the Vishu.

With the shop remained closed for Sunday and Monday, scores of people, who reached the outlet functioning adjacent to Supplyco supermarket at Thirunakkara, had to return home in vain.

According to sources close to Supplyco, its trade outlet remained closed on Monday as the day was a government holiday owing to the birth anniversary of Dr B R Ambedkar.

In the meantime, some of the customers, who reached the shop and turned against Supplyco authorities, created mild trouble at the place.

The Supplyco Vishu-Easter trade outlet, which was opened on April 4 is expected to function till April 19. Though the special trade fairs and melas, being launched as part of any festival or celebrations, usually function on Sundays, the Supplyco’s special outlet remained closed on Sunday and Monday.

The two-day closure of the Vishu-Easter outlet irked the mediocre families as their plans to buy consumables and components of Vishu celebrations from the special outlet failed.

With the trade outlet remained closed even while Supplyco supermarket was seen functioning, consumers raised their voice in front of the outlet as part of registering their protests.

On the other side, the private outlets cashed in on the situation by raising the price of their products, which led to an unexpected price raise on Vishu eve.

Many of the families had to buy vegetables and other required things for Vishu celebrations from the open market at an increased price. The Vishu-Easter melas are being organised at four levels in Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Kottayam and Ernakulam districts.
