In the wake of the suicide of a Class IX girl student of Sulla Musalam Oriental High School at Areekode in Malappuram, the Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has summoned the principal of the school to furnish an explanation.

The intervention came after reports that the girl committed suicide after the school intentionally failed her in the annual exam. The panel has asked the principal to appear before it on May 15 along with the answer scripts of all children who failed the examination.

The Director of Public Instruction has also been asked to submit an explanation before May 15. It also asked the DPI if any norms are in place to prevent schools from intentionally failing students in Class IX to attain 100 per cent results in Class X.
