Kalamandalam Awards Declared

THRISSUR: The Kerala Kalamandalam fellowship, awards, and endowments for 2013 have been announced. Bharatanatyam Padma Bhushan Padma Subramanyam has been selected for the Kerala Kalamandalam Fellowship and mizhavu maestro Padmashri P K Narayanan Nambiar has been chosen for the Kalarathnam Award.

They have been selected considering their outstanding contributions to their respective fields. While the fellowship carries a purse of Rs 35,000, a citation and a plaque, the Kalaratnam Award carries a cash prize of Rs 10,000 and a citation.

Actor Jayaram has been selected for the newly instituted M K K Nair Award, instituted by the Kalamandalam for persons who excel in the field of performing arts, science, literature and media and contribute for the growth of art in general. The other Kalamandalam awards winners are: Kalamandalam Rajashekaran (kathakali acting), Kalamandalam Subramanyan (kathakali music), Kalamandalam (Panjal) Unnikrishnan (chenda), Kalamandalam Venukuttan (madhalam), Shilpi Janardhanan (chutty), Kalamandalam Unnikrishnan Nambiar (mizhavu), Kalamandalam Kavita Krishnakumar (dance), Painkulam Narayana Chakyar (koodiyattom), Kalamandalam Janardhanan (thullal), and K G Poulose (Book on art).  Kalamandalam Arun B Warrier has been selected for the Yuva Prathiba award, Margi Usha for the V S Sharma Endowment and  Kalamandalam Krishnaprasad for the Bhagavathar Kunjunni Thampuran Endowment. V R Prabodha Chandran has been selected for the Mukundaraja Endowment Award.

Governor Justice P Sathasivam will present the awards at a function to be held at Kalamandalam at Cheruthuruthi on November 9.  The selection panel comprised the Vice-Chancellor (chairman) and Pandalam Sudhakaran, Madavur Vasudevan Nair, Mankulam Krishnan Namboothiri, Kalamandalam Saraswathy, Vasanthi Menon, and Vattaparambil Gopinathapillai.
