THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  ‘Aarachar’ written by K R Meera has been selected for Vayalar Ramavarma Literary Award 2014, instituted by Vayalar Ramavarma Memorial Trust.

The award carries a cash prize of Rs 25,000, a memento designed by Kanayi Kunhiraman and a citation.

The jury comprising writers Prabha Varma, A M Sreedharan and Amritha selected the awardee, Trust president M K Sanu said here while announcing the award on Saturday.

Prabha Varma said that the treatment of the novel acts as a link between modernity and tradition. “Usually novels are written against the backdrop of either tradition or modernity. But K R Meera has chosen a different path in portraying the story of Aarachar in this novel,” said Varma. The award will be handed over to her at a function to be held in AKG Hall here on October 27, the death anniversary of Vayalar Ramavarma, at 5.30 pm.

As part of the function a musical show, comprising famous songs and poems written by Vayalar Ramavarma, will be staged.
