Licence of 50 Bus Drivers Likely to be Cancelled

KAKKANAD: As many as 50 licences of private bus drivers under the city limits is likely to be cancelled for violating the High court order that prohibits overtaking in Kochi city limits.

The Motor Vehicles Department(MVD)along with the police booked 50 cases for overtaking. A hearing was held at the Regional Transport Authority meeting at the civil station on Thursday.

“Not only the permits, but also the licence of the drivers will be cancelled if they are caught overtaking again. We cannot allow such violations in the city limit life is put at risk,” District Collector M G Rajamanickam said at the meet. 

However, the decision on the action to be taken against the bus operators will be taken  at the RTA board which has the District Collector as Chairman and Deputy Transport Commissioner as member.

“Initially, we will cancel the licence of drivers and permits of the operators on a temporary basis. If the violation is repeated, the licence will be cancelled and the owner blacklisted. The official announcement in this regard will be released by the RTA soon,” he said.

The RTA board also discussed trip curtailment, time violation of Vytilla-Vytilla circular bus services. “A squad comprising MVD and Police Department hands will be deployed to check trip,” the Collector said.

A total of 167 cases came up at the hearing. The decisions will be released within a month.
