THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy presented the award instituted jointly by the Department for Cultural Affairs and Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi for outstanding contribution in the filed of art, culture and social fields, to singer K J Yesudas here on Thursday.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that the ‘Sruthi Tharangam’, a free cochlear implantation scheme implemented by the government for  deaf and dumb children of financially backward families, will be extended. The scheme was implemented to cover 100 children.

“From now on all the eligible applicants will be included in the scheme,” Chandy said.

“Yesudas is an outstanding  personality not only as a singer and his championing the cause of secularism and active participation in social and cultural issues are praiseworthy and beyond compare,” the Chief Minister added.
