MALAPPURAM: A 27-year-old woman allegedly strangled her infant children to death before dousing herself in an inflammable substance and set herself alight in Valancheri, near here, on Monday, police said.

The Kuttipuram police station received a phone call around 7 am about Jaseela Rahman who strangulated her twin children named Farsana and Farhad, both aged one, and then set herself ablaze in kerosene.

The police, who have filed a case of suspected murders, did not divulge the motive behind the crime. The three were found dead by her husband Fasalu Rahaman at about 6.30 am and he immediately alerted the police to the incident.

Rahman first found his two children lying dead in the bedroom and later recovered the charred body of Jaseela in the bathroom, a few metres away from their room.

Though they were taken to the nearby hospital, the doctors declared them brought dead at the Taluk hospital in Valanchery. The bodies have been sent to the Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, for postmortem examination.

The police said they were investigating whether the woman was undergoing any kind pressure or torture within the family.
