THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Nationalist Congress Party's (NCP) Kerala president Uzhavor Vijayan passed away today morning. He was 60.

He died at a private hospital in Kochi where he was undergoing treatment for cardiac issues.

Sources said, his condition worsened on Saturday. Today morning, he breathed his last.

He entered the political arena through the Kerala Students Union -- the Kerala wing of the National Students Union of Indian National Congress. Later, he made a mark in Kerala politics and became a leader of the masses -- thanks to his oratorical skills.

However, after INC split in 1978, he joined Congress (S) and served as its district president. Later, Vijayan joined the NCP, a constituent of Kerala's Left front.

The satirical style with which Vijayan communicated with the masses made him a popular leader. He soon became an asset for the Left Front. Also, he was among a very few leaders who commanded the unstinted affection of leaders from both fronts.

His oratorical skills earned him a place among the state's political titans like EK Nayanar, Lonappan Nambadan, and TK Hamsa.
