Guruvayur temple to have face scanners soon

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thieves or wanted criminals in state police records who visit Guruvayur temple will be under the scanner soon.

Devaswom and Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran said a high-end face recognition system will be installed at the temple within three months. This will be the first of its kind set up in a place of worship in the country, he said after a meeting to review development projects at the temple.

At  present, face recognition system is used at airports and during VVIP visits.

A total of 292 cameras, including 10 with face recognition facility, will be installed at the temple. Real-time monitoring will be conducted through a video wall which will be 7 ft wide and 4 ft high. The new facility will help locate children lost on temple premises.  

The minister said various projects will be implemented at the temple utilising Rs 46 crore under the Union Government’s “Prasadam” scheme. They include a tourism facilitation centre, tourist amenity centre and a multilevel car parking facility that can accommodate 300 vehicles.

A review meeting held at the temple was attended by K V Abdul Khader MLA, Tourism Director P Balakiran, Guruvayur Devaswom Board chairman N Peethambara Kurup, administrator Sasidharan, Guruvayur municipal chairperson P K Santhakumari and vice-chairman K P Vinod.
