KOCHI: One more custodial death will haunt the state government as a 26-year-old who was an accused in the case related to the suicide of a 55-year-old man in Varappuzha died at a private hospital in the city on Monday following alleged custodial torture.

The Varapuzha police took Sreejith Ramakrishnan, a native of Devaswompadam, into custody on Friday in connection with the suicide case and booked him under various provisions of the Arms Act, rioting and housebreaking. He was shifted to a private hospital in Kochi on Sunday morning following complaints of abdominal pain. Hospital sources said Sreejith was admitted with complaints of abdominal pain and difficulty to pass urine. “The doctors assessed him to be suffering from intra-abdominal injuries, performed a surgery and shifted him to the Emergency care unit. However, his condition worsened on Monday and he died at 6.45 pm,” said hospital sources. On Monday, State Human Rights Commission chairperson P Mohanadas had visited Sreejith in hospital.
