KANNUR: By indirectly admitting that the accused in the Shuhaib murder case is a CPM member, and the party will inquire about the involvement of its workers on its own, the CPM has once again found itself in an unenviable position. It was while speaking to reporters after the all-party peace meeting held at the Kannur collectorate on Wednesday, that CPM district secretary P Jayarajan indirectly admitted that Akash Thillankeri is a party member.

“We never claimed that Akash Thillankeri is not a party member,” said Jayarajan. “When a crime takes place, the police arrest people. For that they they have their own parameters. But, that doesn’t mean that a person has really committed the crime. Here, let the police do their duty. We have our own system to analyse the involvement of a party member in a crime. That is also taking place.” When asked whether the statement can be interpreted as a sign the party has no trust in the police investigation, Jayarajan was non-committal. “I said what I have to. I didn’t say CPM has no trust in the investigation,” he said.
“By boycotting the all-party peace meeting over a silly issue, the Congress has once again proved they are not committed to peace. It is to continue their drama which is being staged in front of the collectorate that they boycotted it. They would have done it anyway,” he said.

“The Congress is trying to sabotage the investigation by various means. The person who is in hospital in connection with the attack said the other day that it was not the persons arrested who had attacked Shuhaib. Such statements will only weaken the case. If the eyewitness says things like this, the case will be sabotaged,” he said.

“If the Congress has any evidence in connection with the murder, they can hand it over to the investigation team. If they don’t have trust in the probe team, they could have said that in the meeting held on Wednesday,” he said.

“The CPM had participated in many peace meetings when our cadres were killed by political opponents. But, we never stepped back from our democratic commitments by staying away from such meetings,” added Jayarajan.
