King Cobra ‘slithers’ into Nandankanan

BHUBANESWAR: An 11-foot king cobra has become the latest inmate of Nandankanan Zoological Park here. Rescued from Niala village, near Khurda, the reptile was brought to the zoo on Sunday night.

The villagers of Niala reported the king cobra which had entered a poultry farm and got inside a mesh cage. By trying to get out, it had hurt itself. When Suvendu Mallick of Snake Helpline was intimated, he rushed to the village and captured the reptile.

With the help of the Forest Department, the snake was transferred to Nandankanan Zoo where it was given treatment for its injuries. The king cobra was measured at 11.5 ft.

"I have captured king cobras in the past too. This one came after a gap and it was absolutely majestic,” Mallick said.
