Chaurasia’s son directs documentary on flute maestro

Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia’s long journey towards perfection has taken more than 60 years of arduous practice. His musical journey along with his bamboo flute has been an inspiration for many. He is also a dedicated teacher with several devoted students world-wide beginning to make their mark on the concert stage.

Depicting this illustrious life journey, an inspiring documentary “Bansuri Guru” will have a special screening at the Siksha O Anusandhan University in Bhubaneswar on Sunday. The screening will be inaugurated by Governor SC Jamir in the presence of Pt Chaurasia, eminent actress Waheeda Rehman and Odia sculptor Raghunath Mohapatra.

The documentary will be released at select PVR theatres nation-wide on Friday.

“Bansuri Guru” picturises a lyrical journey depicting the life and times of Pandit Chaurasia. The documentary is the directorial debut of Pt Chaurasia’s son Rajeev Chaurasia.The 60-minute documentary portrays the key milestones of Pt Chaurasia’s life accompanied by guests, family interviews and archival footage.

“Bansuri Guru depicts poignant years of Pt Chaurasia’s life and unravels the story of a man who was preordained to be an extraordinary musician despite every possible rule in the rule book that drove him the other way. It is a story of a man’s triumph against all odds to achieve that one thing which is closest to him, his perseverance to excel and his destiny to master his passion,” Rajeev told mediapersons at the Vrindaban Gurukul here on Friday. He said while the documentary was an humble tribute to his father, “Bansuri Guru” is also the meastro’s tribute to Odisha which played a crucial role in the formative years of Pt Chaurasia’s musical career. During his 20s, Pt Chaurasia was as an All India Radio musician in Cuttack from 1958 to 1961. “Though Bansuri Guru is a documentary, I have made it in a story-telling format with loads of cinematic idioms and powerful music,” added Rajeev. It is first documentary to be commercially launched by Films Division, Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

It is being supported for an all-India release by Tata Consultancy Services under the PVR Director’s Rare banner.
