The Higher Education Department’s advertisement for recruitment to posts of principals has come in for sharp criticism since not many opportunities are available for persons with disabilities (PWDs). With just one position reserved for the PWDs, it is more than likely that eligible physically challenged persons will not make the cut.

According to secretary of Satyabhama College for Hearing Impaired Niroja Laxmi Mohapatra, despite the fact that there are different categories of PWDs, three such as hearing, speech and visually impaired compete in the government job sector.

However, the reservation for recruitment of principals will only ensure that only physically handicapped candidates compete and get selected, she said.

With such policies in place, Mohapatra said the Government should give unemployment allowance to those PWDs who are yet to land a job.
