BMC concern over rising slums

The ever increasing slum population and lack of access to toilets in the Capital is causing a major problem in the City.

The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has added around 59 new slums in the past one year. At present, there are 436 slums out of which only 116 have been categorised as authorised slums.

The current survey i taken up after 2008.Out of 436 slums, 200 slums lack access to toilets. According to an estimate, each slum is expected to have at least 10 households with four people residing in each house. BMC is currently working on constructing public and community toilets for the slum dwellers. The project which has been undertaken in PPP mode is being funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). The land identification for project is under process.
