Thunderstorm plunges Cuttack in darkness

Major parts of the city plunged into darkness for nearly five hours due to disruption in power supply in the wake of the storm.

Normal life was thrown out of gear as a thunderstorm hit the city on Tuesday evening. Major parts of the city plunged into darkness for nearly five hours due to disruption in power supply in the wake of the storm.

Though the storm accompanied by heavy thunder, lightning and strong gale winds lasted for a short period, it left behind a trail of uprooted trees and electricity poles. Not only were electricity poles brought down but also supply cables snapped due to the falling trees at many places. Transformers were also damaged at a couple of places, thus leading to power outage in most parts of the city.

The Central Electricity Supply Utility (CESU) initiated emergency restoration works but till late in the night power supply had been resumed to only a few pockets.

The darkness as well as the extent of the damage caused by the storm had affected speedy restoration works, CESU sources said.
