Former speaker Somnath Rath passed away at Bhanjanagar on Monday evening.

Former speaker Somnath Rath passed away at Bhanjanagar on Monday evening.

He was 93 and is survived by three sons and three daughters. Rath had lost his wife three years ago.

Rath was instrumental for formation of several institutions and organisations in Bhanjanagar.

After completing his graduation from Khalikote Autonomous College, he did law at MS Law College, Cuttack.

After practising at Bhanjanagar Bar, he joined Congress in 1971 and was elected as Bhanjanagar MLA. Later, he became a State minister besides holding the Speaker post. He was also elected as Aska MP.

Due to old age and ill health, he distanced himself from active politics two years back, but continued to meet his followers. His cremation would be held at Bhanjanagar, said his son Nrushingha Rath.

Political leaders of Ganjam district have condoled Rath’s death.
