Incessant rain for the last two days has resulted in deluge at Berhampur and other parts of Ganjam district.
Berhampur city alone has received 280 mm of rain in the last 48 hours.
Rivers in Ganjam including Rushikulya, Badanadi, Lohorakhandi, Bahuda, Ghodahada are in spate. Flood water of Rushikulya has entered several villages in Purusotompur block. As many as 20 thatched houses in Sikula village of the block collapsed on Wednesday. “With water level of the river rising, we are apprehending that its embankment might collapse any time if rains continue,” said Hazaribandhu Sahu, a resident of the village.
Similar condition prevails at Aska and Bhanjanagar due to rising water in Badaanadi. One Raibari Behera of Alipur was swept away in Badanadi at Aska block on Wednesday. Though she was rescued by locals, the woman was declared brought dead at a local hospital.
River Ghodahada was flowing above the danger mark at several places including Hinjili and Digapahandi areas. Sources said water in Ghodahada reservoir will cross its storage capacity if rains condition.
All six sluice gates of the reservoir have been opened and the connecting canals are also overflowing, resulting in breaches at several places.
At Berhampur, low lying areas like Gajapati Nagar, Nilachal Nagar, Alakapuri and Somonath Nagar have been water-logged.
Almost all roads in the city were water-logged with waist-deep water.
