BHUBANESWAR:  The anti-corruption vigilance wing today arrested an IAS officer on the charge of irregularities in the recruitment of Revenue Inspectors and Amins when he was collector of Balangir district.

Debraj Mishra, who was placed under suspension in September last after prime facie evidences were received against him, was arrested from his residence in the state capital this morning, vigilance officials said.

Gross irregularities were found in the recruitment of RIs and Amins in Balangir district during Mishra's tenure as collector between August 2012 and July 2013, they said.

It was found that some candidates securing only two marks in the RI/Amin recruitment examination had been selected for jobs, while a candidate with 98 marks was denied appointment, they said.

Meanwhile, the state government has also ordered a crime branch probe into the allegations.

The Crime Branch has also registered cases at SDJM, Balangir against Mishra and four OAS officers – Anita Panda, Binod Bihari Das, Raghunath Mundari and Ripunath Suna – and senior clerk Niranjan Tripathy in connection with the recruitment scam.      The Revenue Divisional Commissioner (North) had also conducted an inquiry into the scam and submitted its report to the state government.
