Jilted Lover Attacks Girl in Pipili

PURI: A girl was abducted and assaulted by a jilted lover after she refused his marriage proposal, on Sunday. Police have launched a manhunt to nab the youth and his friends who helped him in the crime.

The incident took place at Kankanadua village under the Pipili police limits. The 24-year-old girl, a PG student of a local college, was in her house when one Bijay of the same village came to visit her. When she opened the door, Bijay and his friends dragged her into a Tata Sumo jeep and fled the spot. Though some family members of the girl tried to resist the youths, they failed.

They took her to the river embankment road where Bijay again proposed to marry her. When she refused, he and his friends slapped her and kicked her in the waist following which, she fell unconscious. Later, one of his associates took the girl in a motorcycle and threw her behind her house in the village.

Police said a criminal case has been registered and all the accused have been identified. Efforts are on to arrest them, while the girl has been admitted to a local hospital.

Miscreants Elude Police Dragnet

Police are yet to arrest the miscreants who attacked two persons with swords on Saturday morning at separate places in Puri. The two are fighting for their lives at the SCB Medical, Cuttack.

Dipak Kar, a scrap merchant of Chitrakar Sahi, was dragged out of his house by some miscreants and attacked with swords. They chased Kar on the busy road and assaulted him, leaving him in a pool of blood.

In a separate incident on the same day, criminals attacked another person at Badasankha with swords and fled.

Chains Snatched

Two motorcycle-bound youths snatched the chain of one Pravatmanjari Mishra, an employee of PKDA, near the SCS College gate on Sunday and fled. In another incident, miscreants snatched the gold chain of one Pravati Nayak of PWD Colony. They also snatched a bag from her that contained `40,000 in cash. Cases have been registered.

Seven Arrested in Murder Case

Jharsuguda: Seven persons were arrested on Monday for their alleged involvement in the murder of one Manoj Marai in Bandhbahal colony recently. The weapon used in the murder has been seized.

They are Mohammed Kamal, Shivsagar, Binod Bag, Gudu Sa, Lochan Naik, Ram Kumar Mehta, and Manoj Barik. Police said while a majority of them are 18-year-old, some are juveniles.  On Thursday last week, Marai was hacked to death by some miscreants.

Brajrajnagar SDPO said Marai was a criminal himself and involved in thefts and eve teasing. He was jailed last year for his involvement in a theft case. Police said Marai was an accomplice of the seven and the murder was the result of past enmity. “They took him from the area on the pretext of watching ‘jatra’ and got him heavily drunk. They later hacked him to death on Thursday night,” the SDPO said. ENS
