BMC Draws up Plan for Sanitation Woes in Bhubaneswar

Express News Service

BHUBANESWAR: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has come up with a multi-pronged strategy to deal with sanitation and waste management issues which have  been a matter of concern for the citizens.

A ward-specific sanitation plan will be prepared by Swachh Bhubaneswar Abhiyan (SBA) Cell on the basis of guidelines specified in the Corporation’s strategy.

The ward-wise sanitation plan includes appropriate quantification of solid waste generated and removed per day in each of the 67 wards under BMC.

The BMC will examine its inventory of bins, manpower, tricycle, equipment and frequency of drain cleaning and upgrade as per necessity for effective Solid Waste Management (SWM) at the ward level.

To ensure proper management of logistics, the corporation will streamline and increase the movement of waste carrying vehicles to places which lack hygiene and are prone to unsystematic garbage disposal.

Experts will analyse the existing solid waste management system in the wards and prepare a resource management and contingency plan to streamline the process.

Tertiary waste transfer stations will be identified in each ward and these points will later be incorporated in the zonal development plan.

The civic body has mooted  revenue generation through composting, recycling and sorting.

A cost recovery mechanism for SWM in each ward will be put in place within a month, said sources.

The spatial distribution of population in each ward and water supply status will be documented. Similarly, public and community toilets, sewerage system and storm water drainage will be overhauled in the city.

The options for improvisation of new technology for SWM is being discussed with the Housing and Urban Development department.

A preliminary report on communication, impact and financial assessment for it will be prepared, a BMC official said.

More sanitation experts will be recruited for the SBA cell for sanitation inspection and enforcement.
