ATM Card Holders Looted, 1 Arrested

KENDRAPARA: Police on Saturday arrested a fraudster who had looted money of many gullible ATM card holders.

The fraudster, Sanjib Kumar Mandal of Kulagaon village under Salepur police station limits, looted lakhs of rupees of many ATM card holders in Kendrapara district and its nearby areas.

On Friday, Sudeep Mohanty of Naganapur village, filed an FIR in Patkura  police station stating that Mandal  withdrew Rs 22,000 from his ATM card after helping him in withdrawing the money from an ATM at Korua village. Mandal, after helping a person for withdrawing money, cleverly kept the original ATM card and gave fake ATM card to the account holder. Later, he used to withdraw all the money from the account.

On Saturday, Sudeep Mohanty saw the fraudster near an ATM at Garadapur and alerted the police. Police arrested Mandal on charges of illegally withdrawing money of other account holders from the ATMs. “We also checked his photo in the CCTV of the ATM”,  IIC of Patkura police station Anapurna Behera said. During investigation, police came to know that Mandal on Friday withdrew  Rs 11,500 from the account of Jayaprakash Bhuyan from an ATM at Mahala.

During interrogation, Mandal confessed that he withdrew  huge amounts of other account holders from the ATMs at many places.

Police seized  Rs 32,000 , 12 ATM cards and a mobike from him.  He was  booked under Section 420, 379 and 378 of IPC. Mandal was produced in the court of Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) here on Saturday.

The court rejected his bail application and remanded him in police custody.
