BALANGIR: Mem Tanla, grandmother of Gita Tanla (17) who was killed by her father for marrying outside their caste, refused to accept the body of the girl after postmortem on Thursday. As no one claimed the body, the sanitation staff of Balangir Municipality dumped it in a garbage-disposal vehicle and buried at Bijakhaman, situated on the outskirts of Balangir town.

The accused Kailash Tanla of Khuntsanlei in Patnagarh sub-division of the district is yet to be arrested. It is being suspected that he may have fled to Tamil Nadu where his wife is currently staying. Earlier, Kailash and his wife had migrated to Tamil Nadu to work as labourers.

Gita, who was also a migrant labourer, fell in love with Naresh Tandi of Sradhapur under Bongamunda police limits while working in a brick kiln in Vijayawada. Kailash was opposed to their relationship as the boy belonged to a different caste. Things took a turn after Gita became pregnant and came back home with Naresh. But Naresh’s family members did not accept their relationship.  On May 20, Gita was driven out of Naresh’s house. This further fuelled Kailash’s anger who hatched a plot to kill Gita.
