JEYPORE: Heavy rains lashed all parts of Koraput region on Thursday throwing normal life out of gear. An average of 40 mm rainfall was recorded in the past 24 hours.
The region had received brief spells of torrential rainfall, both in the plains as well as on the hills, on Monday, with scanty showers continuing till Wednesday.
Meanwhile, business establishments remained shut in Jeypore, Koraput, Sunabeda and Semilguda areas due to the rains. The heavy downpour also disrupted vehicular traffic on State and National highways.
On the other hand, paddy cultivation in Jeypore, Kundra, Kotpad, Boipariguda and Borrigumma was hampered due to the rains. Farmers were forced to skip the transplantation of seedlings.
Agriculture department sources said the rains would continue for the next three days. Rains in the catchment areas increased the water level in Indravati, Saptadhara, Patali, Janhara, Saveri, Sileru, Kolab and Surli rivers. If the rains continue for another 24 hours, areas in Kotpad, Kundra and Borrigumma may face flood-like situation.
Communication disrupted in Rayagada district
Rayagada: Communication between Gunupur and Andhra Pradesh via Jagannathpur was disrupted after heavy rains washed away a temporary diversion bridge on Thursday morning. The temporary bridge near the nullah in Jagannathpur village was laid after the old bridge caved in due to heavy downpour last month. Since then, the Public Works department had closed the bridge for vehicular movement and built the temporary diversion bridge. Contacted, Superintendent Engineer Gouranga Charan Sahu said the new bridge over the nullah is under construction and a temporary wooden bridge or hume pipe bridge will be reconstructed to restore communication.
