JAGATSINGHPUR: A person was arrested by Tirtol police for allegedly killing his wife for dowry.

The accused is Niranjan Behera of Billakolar village under Tirtol police limits. He had married Pujarani, a girl of the same village, three years back and theirs was a love marriage.

However, after marriage, Niranjan asked Pujarani to bring dowry and when she refused, he started torturing her.

On Friday, locals found Pujarini hanging from the fan in their house and informed her parents. Niranjan claimed that she had committed suicide. The woman’s father, Kabir Swain, lodged a police complaint alleging that Niranjan killed his daughter for dowry. The accused was arrested and forwarded to court.


Criminal arrested

A criminal, who attempted to kill his rival three years back, was convicted to four years of imprisonment by a local court in Paradip on Friday. Accused Chinmay Biswal of Biswali village under Paradip Lock police limits had opened fire at his rival, Bapina Behera, of the same village on January 20, 2014. Chief Judicial Magistrate, Jagatsinghpur, Ram Krushna Chaudhry convicted Chinmaya to four-year imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 9,000.
